Save Our Domes is working to inform residents of the extent of hard rock gold exploration in the hills surrounding Fairbanks and to facilitate a community-based assessment of impending large-scale mining proposals.
Our Plan
Our focus is to provide local residents critical information on large-scale hardrock gold-mine exploration and development in the Fairbanks area. We aim to identify and clarify land-use conflicts between exploration for hardrock mining and established neighborhoods, and organize a response.
We have three essential goals:
Research and synthesize information from industry and agencies to inform, update, and engage residents in decisions related to exploration and mining;
Create permanent protection for lands that support neighborhoods, businesses, and recreation.
Develop higher standards of operations and reclamation and increase public involvement and transparent planning for perpetuity.
Save Our Domes will consider pursuit of Mineral Closing Orders (MCO), which are granted by the State to close all forms of mineral entry on land with other intended uses, such as residential development.
Collaborations and outreach continues with local residents, government, businesses, and visitors to work towards creating a compatible land use plan for each of the targeted areas that would make large MCOs feasible.
We will continue to communicate with local and state agencies and governments to encourage protections for neighborhoods and individual properties and pursue sustainable land use instead of gold mining.
